Education

Many educational opportunities and resources for the development of our workforce life-long learning, and special skills enhancement are available in Central Pennsylvania. Whether participating in the secondary public education system or state-owned institutions and private sector colleges and universities, or trade, charter and private schools, residents stay current with training and education. Employers benefit from customized training programs that enhance their workforce skills, and convenient access to numerous local education agencies in addition to a truck driving school.

Through our regional center for workforce development (CPWDC) you can access WorkKeys® a job skills assessment system developed by ACT, a national non-profit company steeped in a tradition of building quality assessment tools. Contact the center to qualify for free workforce assessments and career readiness certification.
SECONDARY AND HIGH LEVEL EDUCATION
For high level education, Central Pennsylvania is host to Penn State University and its affiliate technical and trade school Penn College of Technology as well as Bucknell University. Central Pennsylvania also provides its residents with a broad choice of liberal arts Universities as well as vocational and specialized schools offering such curriculums as nursing, computer and telecommunications.
PRIMARY EDUCATION
Central Pennsylvania offers its families and youth a broad range of primary educational options from which to choose. Public and Private Schools providing specialized education in the arts and sciences are available. School sizes range from graduating classes up to 700 persons down to a small private school with graduating classes of about 50. With the help of their adult mentors, Central Pennsylvania youth have placed in the top three in all age groups in the world renowned odyssey of the mind competitions at the national level. In addition, in U.S. News & World Reports best high school ratings. two of our highschools won silver medals and another two won bronze medals.

Colleges/Universities
Bloomsburg University
Enrollment: 8,600 students
Bloomsburg University has 63 undergraduate majors and 18 graduate programs with a strong reputation for teacher education. Programs of study include the arts and humanities, sciences, education, health care, and business
Founded in 1839 as a four-year, public university, Bloomsburg is one of 14 members of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education.
In conjunction with academic programs, the university serves the region's schools, businesses and health care needs with a professional Speech, Hearing and Language Clinic; the Institute for Interactive Technologies, Corporate Institute, the Reading Center, and Continuing Education programs.
The U.S. News & World Report 2006 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” guide ranks Bloomsburg as one of the Best University Master's Degrees in the north region.
Lock Haven University
Enrollment: 4,600 students
Lock Haven University has more than 75 undergraduate programs and three graduate programs. These include elementary education, business administration, and health care professions as well as many others.
LHU has an outstanding international mission, offering 21 programs in 17 countries.
In 1983, the university joined the State System of Higher Education and became Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania College of Technology
Enrollment: 5,900 students
Penn College has 28 Bachelor degrees and 80 Associate degrees with the largest majors being Computer Information Technology, Business Management, Electronics Technology and Computer Science.

In 1989, Penn College became an affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University. Ranked #48 in the Best National University category and #14 in the Top 50 Public National Universities.
Bucknell University
Enrollment: 3,500 students
Bucknell students have their choice of 53 majors and 64 minors including professional programs for accounting, management, education and engineering as well as pre-professional programs for law and medicine.
Bucknell ranks 27th in the top 50 Best Liberal Arts Colleges according to a survey of college presidents and deans (U.S. News and World Report's 2006 edition of America's Best Colleges. The engineering program is ranked as the 8th Best Undergraduate Engineering Program among non-Ph.D.-granting schools.
“Peterson’s Top Colleges of Science,” a national reference guide, named Bucknell as having one of the top 190 science programs in the country. Programs in biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics and astronomy were judged at more than 1,400 institutions nationwide.
Susquehanna University
Enrollment: 2,000 students
Susquehanna University offers more than 50 majors and 48 minors through three schools: School of Arts, Humanities and Communications; School of Natural and Social Sciences; and the Sigmund Weis School of Business.
The U.S. News & World Report 2006 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” guide ranks Susquehanna in the top 10 list of the Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the Northeast for the 7th straight year.
Susquehanna University ranks #2 in Yahoo’s Internet Life’s list of the “100 Most Wired Baccalaureate II Colleges.”
Lycoming College
2005 Fall Enrollment: 1,486 students
Lycoming College offers 33 majors, which include Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics as well as pre-professional programs for Law and Medicine.
U.S. News & World Report 2006 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” guide ranks Lycoming College in the top list of Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the Northeast.
99% of graduating students from Lycoming College will find jobs or enter grad school within 6 months of graduation.
2005 Fall Enrollment: 1449 students
Juniata is an independent, co-educational college of liberal arts and sciences.
Bachelor Degrees offered include Biology/Pre-Health, Education, Accounting/Business, Chemistry, Environmental Science/Studies, Sociology (including Social Work, Anthropology & Criminal Justice), and Psychology.
This beautiful 110-acre main campus is supplemented by the 365-acre Baker-Henry Nature Preserve and Baker Peace Chapel
Luzerne County Community College, Northumberland Regional Center
The Northumberland Regional Center offers degrees, with the largest majors being Business Administration, Criminal Justice and Human Services.
The Northumberland Regional Center has just added a Nursing Associates Degree program.
Other universities within easy commuting distance include The Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg Area Community College, Widener College, Kings College, and Wilkes College.

McCann School of Business and Technology
2003-2004 Enrollment: 841 students
McCann School of Business offers Associate degrees in specialized business degree programs in such majors as Accounting, Marketing and Management, Computer Science and Computer Network Administration, as well as others.
Newport Business Institute
2003-2004 Enrollment: 145 students
The Newport Business Institute offers Associate degrees in specialized Business degree programs in such majors as Accounting, Management, and Microcomputers.
Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center – Lewistown, PA
The Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as building construction, electronics technology, healthcare, and metalworking technology.
South Hills School of Business & Technology, Lewistown Campus
2005 Fall Enrollment: 715 students
The South Hills School of Business & Technology offers 3 one year and 5 two year degree programs in such majors as such Business Administration, Computer Office Specialist, and Computer Information Systems.
Professional Drivers Academy
2005 Fall Enrollment: 70 students
Licensed by PA Department of Education. The academy is certified by the Professional Truck Driver's Institute and offers certified training courses for both experienced and in- experienced drivers. Programs available to obtain HAZMAT, Double-Triple, and Tanker endorsements.
Central Susquehanna LPN Career Center
2005 Fall Enrollment: 64 students (full time and part time)
The Career Center offers a one year state approved Licensed Practical Nursing program through their experienced nursing instructors.
Wrightco Technologies Technical Training Institute, Mt. Carmel Campus
2003-2004 Enrollment: 195 students
Wrightco offers hands-on technical training in fiber optics, telecommunications, closed circuit TV, digital phone, CAT5 data cabling, and electronic alarms.
Triangle Tech, Sunbury Campus
2005 Fall Enrollment: 127 students
Opened in October 2002, the Sunbury campus offers Associate Degrees in Maintenance Electricity and a Technical Degree in Construction Technology.

School districts in Pennsylvania frequently service multiple communities and cross over traditional municipal boundaries. Educational support services are available from the BlaST IU, Central IU, CSIU, and Tuscarora IU, which are intermediate units serving the Focus region. The Columbia-Montour AVTS offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as building construction, computer technology, machine technology, and welding technology.
Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center
The Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as building construction, electronics technology, healthcare, and metalworking technology
Keystone Central Area Vocational Technical School
The Keystone Central AVTS offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as accounting, construction, draft design technology, healthcare, and office technology.
Lycoming Career and Technology Center
The Lycoming County Career Consortium offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as building construction, computer technology, health occupations, and manufacturing technology.
Northumberland County Area Vocational Technical School
The Northumberland AVTS offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as the culinary arts, automotive technology, computer technology, and electrical construction.
SUN Area Career & Technology Center
Awarded the first ISO 9001 Registration for a Career & Technology Center in the United States. This registration certifies that SUN Tech has met international standards set by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) for its industrial arts/technology training, as well as the quality of this program which includes work-based training. SUN Tech now joins other ISO 9001-registered organizations in the Central Pennsylvania area including Brush Industries, Playworld Systems, and QE Manufacturing. The SUN Tech offers technical and vocational training in such career fields as building construction, electronics technology, healthcare, information technology, and wood products manufacturing.
